The Nursing Department is a cornerstone of the university community’s patient care and clinical operations.
The department provides a wide range of services, including patient assessment, treatment support, emergency care, and health education.
Our team of nurses works tirelessly to ensure the well-being of both students and staff, offering compassionate care, managing outpatient and inpatient services, and responding to emergencies swiftly and effectively.
Whether assisting with routine check-ups or offering medical support during university events, the nursing department plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of healthcare services at OOU.
Nursing Services
1. Patient Assessment and Triage
We are responsible for conducting initial assessments of all incoming patients.
We evaluate the urgency of care required by measuring and recording vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate.
Our role is critical in identifying patients who need immediate medical attention and directing them to the appropriate healthcare provider or department.

2. Patient Care and Monitoring
We provide essential routine care, which includes tasks like dressing wounds and administering injections.
We also administer medications prescribed by doctors, carefully monitoring patients for any reactions or side effects.
In inpatient settings, we assist patients with personal care needs, such as mobility and hygiene, ensuring they remain comfortable throughout their hospital stay.
As patients recover, we observe and document their progress closely, ensuring treatments are effective and making adjustments when necessary.
3. Medication Administration
A significant part of our role involves administering medications in various forms—whether oral, intravenous, or intramuscular—according to physician prescriptions.
We ensure medications are given in the correct dosage and at proper intervals while watching for allergic reactions or complications.
In emergencies, we are often the first responders, delivering critical first aid, stabilising patients, and initiating life-saving treatments.

4. Emergency Response and Critical Care
In situations requiring urgent medical intervention, we play a vital role.
We respond swiftly to emergencies, stabilising patients with life-threatening conditions before transferring them to more specialised care facilities if needed.
We assist doctors during emergency procedures, such as performing CPR or managing serious wounds, providing immediate and crucial care to prevent a patient’s condition from deteriorating.
5. Health Education and Counselling
We are key educators within the healthcare team, providing patients and their families with information about their health conditions, treatment plans, and preventive measures.
We counsel patients on managing chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or hypertension, and emphasise the importance of adhering to treatment regimens.
When patients are discharged, we ensure they fully understand their aftercare instructions to continue their recovery at home.

6. Coordination of patient flow
Our department plays a central role in guiding patients through the various stages of their medical journey, especially during the registration and consultation process.
This includes helping undergraduate students, both regular and CCED, navigate through health assessments, laboratory tests, and consultations with doctors.
We ensure patients move efficiently between departments, reducing waiting times and ensuring that healthcare services are delivered smoothly.
7. Record-keeping and Documentation
Accurate and thorough record-keeping is an integral part of our duties.
We maintain detailed patient records, documenting everything from vital signs and treatments to medication administrations and assessments.
This ensures that all healthcare professionals involved in a patient’s care have access to up-to-date information, allowing for informed decision-making.
Proper documentation also ensures that the health centre complies with institutional and regulatory standards.
8. Outpatient and Ward Management
We also handle outpatient care for patients with non-critical conditions, ensuring they receive prompt and appropriate treatment.
For patients admitted to the hospital’s male and female wards, we manage both the admission and discharge processes, making sure all paperwork is completed and medical instructions are communicated.
Throughout a patient’s stay, we monitor their recovery, ensuring that treatments continue as planned and adjusting care as needed.

9. Emergency Surveillance and Special Event Support
Another vital service we offer involves emergency surveillance during special activities for students and staff across the university community.
We are always on the ground during key events, extending our duty during student exams, including Rain/Harmattan Semester exams, POST UTME exams, and other large gatherings.
Our role includes providing medical support during high-risk periods and ensuring that any health emergencies are quickly attended to.
In addition, we are also present during significant university events, such as inaugural lectures and convocation ceremonies, where our medical expertise is needed to ensure the safety and well-being of all attendees.

3. Maintaining Cleanliness
A clean and hygienic environment is critical in healthcare settings, and health attendants are tasked with maintaining this standard.
They ensure that examination rooms, wards, and other patient care areas are kept clean and disinfected, reducing the risk of infections and creating a safe space for patients and staff alike.

4. Assisting During Emergencies
In emergencies, health attendants provide critical support by assisting nurses and doctors with preparing treatment areas, transporting patients swiftly, and ensuring that necessary equipment is in place.
