At the Medical Laboratory Department, we play a crucial role in supporting the diagnosis and treatment of patients through precise and accurate laboratory testing.
Our team of skilled laboratory professionals is dedicated to providing a wide range of diagnostic services, from routine blood tests to specialised screenings.
The department is made up of qualified medical laboratory scientists and medical laboratory technicians.
We work closely with doctors and other healthcare providers to ensure that every patient receives timely and reliable results that help guide their care.
Whether it’s analysing samples, conducting health screenings, or ensuring the quality of our lab processes, we are committed to delivering exceptional service and contributing to the overall well-being of the university community.
We play a key role in supporting the overall health and well-being of students, staff, and non-staff at OOU.

Departmental Units

1. Haematology Unit
This unit focuses on the study of blood and its components.
We perform tests that help diagnose conditions related to blood disorders, such as anaemia and clotting abnormalities.
Through blood counts, blood films, and coagulation studies, we provide critical data that assist doctors in understanding and treating various blood-related conditions.
2. Microbiology Unit
This unit specialises in identifying infections caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
By analysing samples such as blood, urine, stool, and other bodily fluids, we detect and monitor infections, helping doctors prescribe the most effective treatment.
We also play a key role in infection control by identifying infectious agents early and providing timely results.
3. Chemical Pathology Unit
This unit conducts tests that measure the chemical components of blood and other body fluids.
We analyse markers such as blood glucose, cholesterol, liver enzymes, and kidney function indicators.
Our work helps in diagnosing and managing metabolic disorders like diabetes, liver diseases, and kidney problems, ensuring that patients receive appropriate care.
4. Parasitology Unit
This unit focuses on detecting and diagnosing parasitic infections.
We examine samples like stool and blood to identify parasites such as malaria, intestinal worms, and other protozoans.
Our tests are essential in helping doctors treat parasitic diseases, which are common in certain areas and can have serious health impacts if left untreated.
5. Serology Unit
This unit focuses on detecting antibodies and antigens in blood samples.
We perform tests that help diagnose viral infections, including HIV, hepatitis, and syphilis.
Our role is essential in screening for infections, monitoring disease progression, and confirming the effectiveness of treatments.
6. Toxicology Unit
This unit specialises in identifying and quantifying toxic substances in biological samples.
We conduct tests to detect drugs, alcohol, and other poisons in blood and urine, assisting in cases of overdose, poisoning, or substance abuse.
Our work is critical in providing healthcare professionals with the information they need to manage toxicological emergencies and guide treatment decisions effectively.
Medical laboratory services
1. Patient Sample Collection
We are responsible for collecting various types of samples from patients, including blood, urine, stool, and other bodily fluids.
Our team ensures that samples are collected using sterile techniques, labelled properly, and handled with care to maintain their integrity for accurate testing.
2. Diagnostic Testing
We conduct a wide range of diagnostic tests to help medical officers determine the health status of patients.
From haematology and microbiology to biochemistry and immunology, our laboratory processes are designed to detect diseases, monitor treatment progress, and provide critical information that supports diagnosis and treatment.
3. Medical Fitness Assessment
We conduct medical fitness assessments for both students and staff, providing essential evaluations to ensure individuals are fit for academic, athletic, or professional activities.
These assessments involve comprehensive laboratory tests, such as blood work, urine analysis, and other screenings, to evaluate overall health.
4. Health Screenings
We participate in health screening programs for the university community.
By offering tests such as blood glucose levels, cholesterol, and other routine screenings, we help identify potential health risks early, enabling preventive care and reducing the chances of disease progression.
5. Equipment maintenance and calibration
We ensure that all laboratory equipment is regularly maintained and calibrated to perform optimally, which is essential for accurate testing.
We perform regular quality control checks on our equipment and procedures to ensure that every test result is reliable and accurate.
6. Data Management
We maintain meticulous records of all tests conducted, results obtained, and samples processed.
Our careful data management ensures traceability and allows for easy access to historical patient information when needed, enhancing the continuity and quality of patient care.
