Clinical Department

The Clinical Department is a vital component of the university’s healthcare system, devoted to delivering high-quality medical care to students, staff, and non-staff patients.

The department comprises a diverse team of medical professionals, including medical doctors of various hierarchies, ranging from medical officers to deputy directors.

Each medical officer plays a critical role in providing comprehensive clinical care, conducting diagnoses, and developing treatment plans tailored to individual patient needs.

In addition to routine healthcare services, the department is responsible for managing health emergencies, coordinating patient referrals, and overseeing specialised medical interventions.

We work in close collaboration with nursing staff and health attendants to ensure a seamless flow of care, from initial assessments to ongoing treatment and follow-up.

The department also engages in health education and preventive care initiatives, empowering patients with the knowledge and resources necessary to maintain their health and well-being.

Our mission is to promote the well-being of students, staff, and non-staff patients through high-quality, accessible medical care and health education.

Clinical Department Services

1. Patient Assessment and Diagnosis

In the clinical department, we are primarily responsible for assessing patients’ health conditions.

Our medical officers conduct thorough examinations, review medical histories, and perform diagnostic tests to identify health issues accurately.

This initial assessment is crucial for developing effective treatment plans tailored to each patient’s unique needs.

2. Treatment and Management

Once a diagnosis is established, our clinical team formulates comprehensive treatment plans.

This includes prescribing medications, recommending lifestyle changes, and coordinating follow-up care.

We are dedicated to managing both acute and chronic conditions, ensuring that patients receive appropriate interventions to facilitate recovery.

3. Medical Fitness Certification

We issue medical fitness certifications for students and staff, which are often required for participation in sports or other physical activities.

These certifications ensure that individuals are in good health and capable of safely engaging in physical exertion.

4. Basic Medical Procedures

We are skilled in performing basic medical procedures, including intravenous (IV) cannulation, urethral catheterisation, wound suturing, and other essential interventions.

These procedures are vital for patient care and are conducted with precision and care by our qualified medical officers.

5. Referrals and specialist coordination

In cases where specialised care is needed, we manage patient referrals to external healthcare providers or specialists.

Our medical officers assess the need for specialised interventions and ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care, coordinating communication between different healthcare teams for seamless service delivery.

6. Emergency Care Services

We are equipped to handle medical emergencies efficiently.

We provide immediate care for urgent health issues, stabilising patients and implementing life-saving measures when necessary.

Our training and expertise allow us to respond quickly to critical situations, ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

7. Health Education and Promotion

An essential function of our clinical department is to educate patients about their health conditions and promote preventive care.

We engage in health education initiatives, conducting workshops, seminars, and informational sessions.

We empower patients with knowledge about managing their health, emphasising the importance of regular check-ups, vaccinations, and healthy lifestyle choices.

8. New Students Orientation

As part of the welcoming process, we conduct health services orientations for new students.

This orientation provides essential information about available healthcare services, how to access them, and the importance of maintaining personal health throughout their university experience.

9. OOU Radio Health Talks

We are actively involved in organising and participating in health seminars broadcast on OOU Radio.

These seminars focus on various health topics, providing valuable information to the university community and promoting awareness of health issues affecting students and staff.

10. Medical Reports, Sick Notes, and Leave

Our medical officers are responsible for issuing medical reports, sick notes, and leave certifications for students and staff who require time off due to health issues.

These documents are essential for ensuring that individuals receive the necessary support and accommodations during their recovery.
